Five Ways to Make Sure Your Signs Will Suck

The purpose of any sign is to communicate and inform. The sign to the right serves the purpose, but is it good design? In a word, NO.

Designing and building signs isn’t rocket science. But there are a lot of bad signs out there. We’ve all seen them, on storefronts, banners, and vehicles. Signage is a big part of your image. If you’ve got ugly signs, what does that say to potential customers?

As promised, here’s five ways to make a bad impression:

  1. Use a business card layout for your signs. The layout used for business cards is not transferable to larger scale signage. It looks cramped and awkward. Use the logo, ditch the rest.
  2. Refurbish your old plywood signs. Is it worth saving a few bucks? Plywood doesn’t last forever. Even the snazzy stuff that we use at the sign shop is only guaranteed for 10 years. If your sign is starting to look shabby, or you’ve changed your logo, spring for the new stuff.
  3. Use banner material for permanent signage. Banners are great, don’t get me wrong. But if you’re using a banner for your main storefront sign, you’re going to look like a temporary business. If your business only sells halloween costumes during the month of October, great! If you’re planning to be in business for a longer period, get a real sign.
  4. Use light colored lettering on a white background. If nobody can read your text, what’s the point? High contrast is the way to go, people! Black and white is the easiest to read, but can be a bit boring. There are a ton of color combinations to give your sign the most impact. Check out this post for more information.
  5. Use a too-small sign for the space. If your storefront is 50 feet wide, don’t use a 2′ x 4′ sign. Take advantage of the space! Plus, a teeny-weeny sign just looks ridiculous. If you’re concerned about the price, there are tons of budget-friendly options for you.

When you look good, we look good. We want people to say to you, “Wow, your sign looks great? Where did you get it done?” The best way to make that happen is by selling you well-designed, attractive signs that suit your space and your business’s personality.
